Controller Area Network (CAN bus) continues to be a popular communication standard in all sorts of applications from passenger vehicles to lighting control and building automation. This MicroMod function board allows you to add CAN networking to your next MicroMod project.

The CAN communications are handled by the MCP2515 stand-alone CAN controller paired up with an MCP2551 high-speed CAN transceiver. The MCP2515 is a very popular IC for CAN Bus, which means there are a variety of Arduino libraries already available. We quite like Sandeep Mistry's arduino-CAN Library. If your processor board has a built-in CAN controller, however, you can change a solder jumper on the bottom of the board to address the CAN transceiver directly, bypassing the MCP2515.

There are two connectors on the board for connecting your CAN node. First is a simple 2-pin screw terminal for CANH and CANL. The second is a D-sub connector intended for use with our OBD-II to DB9 Cable. The pinout of the D-sub connector can be changed using a solder jumper on the bottom of the board to be compatible with other "DB9" CAN cables on the market.

A built-in 120 Ohm terminal resistor is disconnected by default but can be connected using a solder jumper for situations where you're creating your own CAN network, instead of inserting a node into an existing bus.

Note: A MicroMod Processor and Main Board are not included with this MicroMod CAN Bus Function Board. These boards will need to be purchased separately.

MicroMod is a modular interface ecosystem that connects a microcontroller “processor board” to various “carrier board” peripherals. Utilizing the M.2 standard, the MicroMod standard is designed to easily swap out processors and function boards on the fly. Pair a specialized carrier board for the project you need with your choice of compatible processor!
