Adding a USB interface to a project can often be a complex and difficult task, often involving a dedicated IC just to perform the USB control. With this IC, you can do both I/O logic and perform the USB communications on a single chip. USB will still require a bit of work but it won't be as complex as having to source a dedicated IC and learn how to use it.
